The Whitley County Sheriff’s Office say a man has been falsely identifying himself as a police officer to scam people. Sheriff Colan Harrell says he makes it sound official and had apparently been through the system before. Harrell says two people called about officers saying they had warrants for their arrest. Warrants they say, they knew nothing about. The victims said the number was coming from the Whitley County Sheriff’s Office. Harrell says this is not something an officer would do. The scammer told his victims they could pay the warrants off just by giving them their card number. Another caller says the caller told him he had missed jury duty and that he had to post bail on a gift card. Harrell says with today’s technology, the caller may not be local, even if the number looks like they are. The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Whitley County Sheriff’s Office at 549-6006.
