The Clay County Sheriff is calling it the most elaborate phone scam she’s seen in her 12 years working at the office. Sheriff Angela Johnson says she is getting calls continuously throughout the day from people who are being targeted. The phone number people see when the scammers call is from Albany, Kentucky. Sheriff Johnson says that is not likely where they are from. The scammers eventually ask for money. But first, they collect as much information as they can from the people they call. Sheriff Johnson has talked with the scammers from multiple phone numbers. Each time she catches them in lies, even claiming THEY are the sheriff. The voice on the call claims to be from the Clay County Sheriff’s Department and says there is a warrant out for your arrest for failure to appear for jury duty. Johnson says the scammer’s number takes you to a computer answering system and gives you options for different offices. If you get a call similar to this, you are asked to contact Sheriff Johnson’s REAL office.
