A family in Clay county is asking for the community’s help after finding multiple items stolen from their family cemetery. Charles Gilbert says his family members have been buried in their Oneida cemetery for more than 70 years. He says this week he discovered multiple items stolen from the graves. Gilbert says a memorial bench was stolen from the side of his cousin’s grave. His cousin is Dan Gilbert. Charles says Dan served as a deputy with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office before moving to Ohio and becoming a police chief. Charles says the bench has his cousin’s name, badge, and badge number engraved on it. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the case. Sheriff Angela Johnson says she fears the thieves might try to sell the stolen items. Anyone with information is asked to call the Clay County Sheriff’s Office at (606) 598-3471.
