Last week, Somerset Mayor Edward Girdler was accused of hitting a teen cyclist and then leaving the scene. Mayor Girdler was cited to Pulaski District Court for the charges of leaving the scene of an accident and failure to render aid or assistance. Somerset City Attorney Carrie Wiese released surveillance video this week of what appears to be Mayor Girdler’s incident with the cyclist. In the video, you can see a cyclist crossing the road when a vehicle comes to an abrupt stop at the intersection of East Mount Vernon and South Maple Street. The cyclist keeps riding toward South Maple Street. Mayor Girdler says this video shows the victim, not him, leaving the accident scene. Mayor Girdler says there is no damage or any evidence of a collision. The victim was taken by a private vehicle to a local hospital and then airlifted out. Her family says she had multiple injuries. State police say they cannot verify the video or comment on the ongoing investigation.
