The Laurel County Detention Center is making way on their new facility, located in the Fariston area of Laurel County. Jailer Jamie Mosley says that he has wanted to build a new jail ever since he was elected, but he made sure the conditions were right for him do so. Mosley says as overcrowding in jails become an increasing problem state-wide, he knew he would need a bigger space. Mosley says their current building built nearly 28 years ago, has 18-20 beds, but has to squeeze double that amount at times. Situations officials say not only effects the humanitarian interests of the inmates, but the staff and taxpayers as well. The new facility will be 105,000 sq ft., and will allow the jail to hold up to around 1,000 total inmates. The expected opening of the new building is around July of next summer.
