The mayor of Somerset is accused of hitting a teenager with his car and then leaving the scene. Kentucky State Police say the collision happened at South Maple Street in Somerset. Troopers say Victoria Smith was riding a bike when she was hit by a vehicle, which then drove away. After investigating, troopers say witnesses identified the driver as Mayor Edward Girdler of Somerset. Girdler was cited to Pulaski District Court for the charges of leaving the scene of an accident and failure to render aid or assistance. The young cyclist was taken to the Lake Cumberland Regional Medical Center in Somerset, then airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Girdler says he left because he didn’t know he hit anyone, but says he did come back and cooperate with police. Police are still investigating the collision. Girdler told reporters he wants to stress that he was not arrested and that he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
