Laurel County Sheriff John Root says they’re investigating a phone scam circulating the area. Investigators say the calls often targets elderly citizens telling them that their child, grandchild, or other relative needs money for immediate emergency procedures after being involved in a serious injury crash. The caller asks for as much as $30,000. Another variation of the scam includes the caller stating that a relative needs bond money after being arrested. Police say in order to protect yourself from scammers, be sure to check caller I.D. If you don’t recognize the number, don’t answer.
