The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office says a man is behind bars after he allegedly stabbed his mother in the neck with a fork. Deputies say Charles R. Perkins is facing charges of assault, wanton endangerment, resisting arrest and menacing. Perkins’ mother told deputies that Charles told his father to “go put a hurting” on her. When the parents tried to get away from him, Perkins allegedly grabbed a nearby fork. Deputies say Perkins told his mother that, since he couldn’t find a knife, this [the fork] would have to do. He then stabbed his mother in the neck with the fork. When officers tried to arrest Perkins, they say he would be compliant for a while, suddenly become aggressive and then become compliant again. At one point, they used a taser but it had almost no effect on him. Deputies say Perkins was clearly under the influence of drugs, alcohol or both. His mother claims Perkins has been released from several mental institutions and will not stay at rehab facilities. The parents told deputies they are scared of their son, who is allegedly diagnosed as mentally unstable and has a substance abuse problem. Perkins was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.
