Saint Joseph London and the Laurel County Health Department is working with the American Lung Association to help smokers quit smoking. The “Freedom From Smoking” courses are a series of classes last 8 weeks, to help smokers successfully quit. The classes teach stress management and coping skills, in order to give confidence about their ability to stop. Instructors say about half-way through the sessions, the smokers quit together, which helps them by having support. Staff say that the skills taught in the course will last far longer than the duration of courses, giving them the ability to remain successful. They say remaining in touch with their group members will help as well.
