The Knox County Sheriff’s Office says a traffic stop resulted in the discovery of stolen checks, credit cards and account numbers. Deputies pulled over a vehicle on 25E in Barbourville. After the driver identified himself, deputies noticed a wallet on the floor of the vehicle. A check of the wallet revealed the driver had given him a false name. As the investigation continued they found 16 stolen checks from different victims all made payable to James Smith. Officers also found 3 stolen credit cards, 2 stolen check books and 2 notebooks containing numerous account numbers. Investigators contacted one of the victims who said one of the credit cards and checkbooks had been taken from her residence. Deputies arrested 35 year old James Holeman Smith of Manchester on several charges including giving an officer false information and theft. Smith was lodged in the Knox County Detention Center. The investigation is continuing and more arrests are expected.
