710 lucky people will win an exclusive permit to hunt elk in Eastern Kentucky. The event is historically held online, but officials with the city of Prestonsburg made it into an event with vendors and more at the Mountain Arts Center. A record number of applications were submitted by more than 35,000 people from places as far away as Alaska and Hawaii. A total of 79,768 applications were entered. 700 names were announced for the general quota elk hunting permits and 10 names for the youth quota. While hunters can apply for multiple permits, they can only be drawn for one. The Commonwealth Office of Technology conducted an independent drawing to choose the winners. Mark Marraccini of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife said it’s the 20th anniversary of elk restoration in Kentucky and they now have a 16-county elk zone in the state and it’s a very popular event.
