The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office says a woman was arrested after she tried to shoplift from Walmart by using children to smuggle items out. Walmart management called police after employees tried to stop Marlena Carter from shoplifting. Carter had reportedly ran into a bathroom but by the time deputies arrived she had returned to her three children. The store manager told deputies Carter was using the self-checkout line when an attendant suspected she was not scanning all of her items. They noticed Carter had a small receipt for several buggies of items. Employees found Carter had wrapped several layers of clothes, bras and shoes around her children under their clothes. She had a total of $768.43 worth of merchandise. Carter was charged with shoplifting and unlawful transaction with a minor. She was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.
