A man wanted in a string of hotel burglaries in several counties, including Laurel, is behind bars. Franklin County police arrested Shawn Odgen this week. Ogden faces more than 20 counts connected to numerous hotel burglaries in the past few months, including the recent theft at a Hampton Inn in London and a Quality Suites in Corbin. Officials expect to have more charges against Ogden as they continue the investigation. They say he has been burglarizing hotels near I-64 and I-75. During the burglaries, Ogden would create diversions by flooding bathrooms or laundry rooms late at night, then break open the registers while clerks dealt with the mess. Sheriff Pat Melton said a video of the burglary in Corbin helped lead police to Ogden, who lives in Frankfort. Melton said Ogden’s crime spree was fueled by an addiction to crack cocaine. He says getting arrested is the best thing that could have happened to Ogden. Ogden had been released on parole recently, and told Melton he had applied for at least 70 different jobs but couldn’t find work. In addition to the multiple theft charges, Ogden also faces several counts of criminal mischief because of the messes he made to distract hotel clerks.
