Laurel County officials have been putting new ideas on the table in order to make a section of West 80 safer. Crosses and flowers have been placed there in memory of a grandmother and her two grandchildren who died there March 2. Officials say 72 year old Gloria Faye Engle was crossing the intersection of West 80 and Sinking Creek Road when her car collided with a pick-up truck. Engle was on her way to drop off the children at school. The community has responded by starting a petition to install a traffic light at that intersection, which is a high traffic area in the mornings and afternoons. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is studying the amount of traffic at the intersection, but its efforts have been delayed due to weather and the fact that Laurel County schools have been out. Both factors impact the traffic numbers needed for accurate data analysis. Officials hope to resume traffic counts on Monday and have a recommendation by the end of April.
