The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to reports of a crash on Hal Rogers Parkway after a man walked out onto the roadway. Investigating officers say 38 year old Jason Cowden walked out in the path of oncoming traffic. They say 55 year old Patsie Gumm, who was driving an SUV, came to a sudden stop. That’s when 63 year old Lonnie Herndon, who was travelling in a pickup truck behind Gumm, crashed into the SUV. Deputies say the crash caused severe damage to both vehicles. Gumm was transported to St. Joseph London with serious injuries. Herndon was transported to the hospital in a personal vehicle with unknown injuries. Police say the wet road prevented Herndon from stopping in time. While investigating, deputies learned that prior to the crash, Cowden threw a flashlight at a car on the Parkway. Cowden then tried to get inside the car he threw the flashlight at. The woman in the car refused to let him in. Cowden was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center charged with wanton endangerment, criminal mischief, resisting arrest, public intoxication- controlled substances, among others.
