Possible changes in Kentucky’s retirement system is one reason Clay County has a new sheriff as of Thursday February 1st. Angela Johnson told WYMT she was appointed by the Clay County Judge Executive after her husband Kevin Johnson, who was sheriff for 12 years and an officer in Clay County for nearly 30 years, decided to retire. Fayette County’s Kathy Whitt is the only elected female Sheriff in the state. Johnson is the second woman in the position in 2018. Angela Johnson worked in the Sheriff’s Office for several years before becoming Sheriff and even started her career in legal work before working at the office. She will not run for reelection but says she is excited to have the opportunity to continue to serve her community through a new role and hopes to inspire other women to do the same. Johnson will serve out her husband’s term in office which will end on December 31st of 2018.
